Leland Jasperse

I received my BA in English and Psychology from UCLA in 2013. I received my M.A. in Psychology from NYU in 2017. In between, I spent two years at UCLA managing and conducting research in a clinical neuroscience lab. My scientific research has examined the neuro/psychological means by which conceptual biases percolate into people’s perceptions of others’ humanness and race. My current work at the University of Chicago furthers the ethos of this research, exploring how ideas about perception, personality, and personhood produce each other in literary and scientific spheres, with a particular focus on early 20th c. representational practices and empirical psychological narratives organizing social difference.
